Meet the future of Neo Soul. Meet singer, songwriter, jazz vocalist, Patricia Maertens. Mix the raw emotion of Nikka Costa, the sophisticated r&b grooves of Jill Scott and the experimental funk of Nelly Furtado. This is intelligent music.
Patricia Maertens' songs will challenge you with bold subtleties and in your face vocal stylings. Her creative range leads you down a musical path where nuances attain maximum force and intricacies abound, all while entertaining you with very solid soul.
Meet Patricia Maertens, a singer/songwriter based in Los Angeles California. She is also the owner of Lothario Records, the label she founded to help promote the new sounds of neo soul music. Neo Soul, or Nu Soul is a rebirth of the traditional soul music from the sixty's and early seventies. It adheres to the most basic tenet of soul music that demands real, unpretentious lyrics, while allowing for individual interpretation and creative expression. After all… that's what put the soul into soul music.
Patricia Maertens's songs, Poorest Man, Spin Out and Burn have recently been listed on the MP3.com Contemporary Urban Chart. Patricia Maertens' MP3.com site offers streaming and mp3 downloads of her music.
Many things impress me about this artist, not the least of which is her search for the right sound. Too many artists write a song, score it, produce it and move on the the next. In some ways this is appropriate, but when breaking new ground it is the path to failure. Patricia admits she reworks her material, remixing, editing and always searching for that extra bit that separates the special from the mundane. It takes courage and the ability to be self-critical to do this effectively. It is the only way to truly create an identifiable sound, one that is unique. More artists should follow her example.
Currently Warner Brothers is considering a few of Patricia's songs for inclusion in a soundtrack of an upcoming movie production. Her one and only country song is being considered by a top country artist. I have no doubt that Patricia Maertens will break through and achieve a level of success. With her work ethic and determination, that level may be very high indeed.
Born in Hollywood California of a German father and an El Salvadoran mother, Patricia spent the first twelve years of her life listening to L.A.'s 1580 KDAY radio and stars such as Rufus, Rose Royce and Rick James. Her biography states that she spent weekends listening to conga music in Centiela Park as well soaking up influences from 70's rock icon Patti Smith and the British punk/ska group The Clash. These influences can go a long way in accounting for Maertens' search for intensity.
Spending summers in the rainforests her mother's homeland of El Salvador and a few cold winters in her father's homeland Germany just may account for the exotic and continental subtleties present in Patricia's music as well. What ever the real answer is, it is all Patricia Maertens; and for us, the listening public, that is good.
