Jimmy Smith, Jazz Legend Dies at 76

Jazz legend Jimmy Smith at his Hammond B3 organ

Jimmy Smith: jazz master of the Hammond B3 organ and the Philadelphia sound

Rest in peace Jimmy, we will not forget you. The jazz world is filled with legends and innovators and you stand tall amongst the best of them.

Jimmy Smith, 76, a jazz genius who demonstrated to the world the burning-power of the Hammond B3 organ when combined with an unrelenting drive to produce new sounds, cool soul and jazz sophistication from the most unlikely of instruments.

Smith coaxed sounds from the Hammond B3 that were so utterly infectious, so unforgettable and moving that the sound became part of the jazz conscious and remains an enduring legacy.
