New School, New York City TANGO & BEYOND: The World of Tango Songs
TANGO & BEYOND, premiered at Joe's Pub last Spring, is a soulful journey through classic tango songs, its characters and themes from the 1930s to the present. It includes some of the most famous tango songs from the golden age of tango (1930-50s), as well as, the new tango of Astor Piazzolla (1960s). Maria Cangiano's soulful interpretation of the songs and the musical arrangements explore the melodramatic nature of the music, as well as, the complex and rich relationship between classic, jazz and tango music.
(PRWEB) October 16, 2005 -- Called by her many fans, "Anna Magnani with voice," Maria Cangiano, originally from Argentina, has a unique voice within Argentine a new generation of Tango singers. Tango is much more than the lusty and sensuous dance familiar in the United States and around the world. Since the genre’s birth among the lower classes of Buenos Aires at the turn of the 19th century, it comprised not only music and dance, but a rich lyric tradition. Tango songs portray humankind conflicts from gender issues, ethnic stereotypes, and class conflicts to the plain old heartache of love in all its forms. Trained as an opera singer, Maria Cangiano combines drama and singing in her interpretation of old and new Tango songs as "mini-operas" or melodramatic stories. As the Brooklyn press said, “The depth and power of Maria Cangiano’s woeful, soulful voice brings the nostalgic nature of the music to life.”
Her musicians -some of the best exponents of new tango in the United States- are four incredible international performers with a rich background in classical, jazz and tango music: Octavio Brunetti (piano), the winner of the New York Tango International Competition, David Hodges (bandoneon), Pedro Giraudo (Bass), and Victor Prieto (accordion), called the “accordion genius” (Daily News). The result is an original "global tango," that mixes traditional and avant-garde tango trends with the musicians' backgrounds and life experiences.

Bone Marrow Drive Being Held to Save the Life of Jazz Saxophonist Michael Brecker and Thousand of Lives Each Year
A bone marrow drive in honor of internationally renowned jazz saxophonist Michael Brecker will be held on Sunday, October 16th from 1-5 P.M. at the Lawrence Family Jewish Community Center in La Jolla. The goal is to expand the base of the national bone marrow registry, potentially helping to save thousands of lives per year, while simultaneously attempting to find a donor with a sufficiently close genetic match to Brecker.
LA JOLLA, CA (PRWEB) October 8, 2005 -- A bone marrow drive in honor of internationally renowned jazz saxophonist Michael Brecker will be held on Sunday, October 16th from 1-5 P.M. at the Lawrence Family Jewish Community Center in La Jolla. The goal is to expand the base of the national bone marrow registry, potentially helping to save thousands of lives per year, while simultaneously attempting to find a donor with a sufficiently close genetic match to Brecker.
Brecker was recently diagnosed with myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS), a life-threatening disease in which bone marrow stops producing healthy blood cells. To survive, he needs a bone marrow transplant using stem cells harvested from a donor's marrow. While he is of Eastern European Jewish descent, people of all backgrounds should consider participating to benefit the broader goal.
Brecker, 56, is an eleven-time Grammy winner and one of the world's foremost jazz musicians. He has played and recorded with such luminaries as Paul Simon, Bruce Springsteen, Elton John, John Lennon, Frank Sinatra, Eric Clapton, Aretha Franklin, Joni Mitchell, Steely Dan, Billy Joel and James Taylor.
The procedure is quick and painless, involving a simple inner cheek scraping and some paperwork. The Gift of Life organization has agreed to cover all testing costs (normally $40). Testing is limited to persons 18 to 60 years old.
Mark your calendars and bring a friend! Sunday, October 16, 2005 from 1-5 P.M. at the Lawrence Family JCC, 4126 Executive Drive, La Jolla, CA or call (858) 457- 3030). For further information, call Wendy Tayer at (858) 350-4680.

About the NYC GoGirls Preformers:
Jenn Eliott- who makes her debut with City Canyons Records with her album, THE SECRET'S OUT, is a singer/songwriter--a leggy strawberry blonde--who comes off as the all-American girl...but there there's a subtle heat and power (with a little mischeif) to her voice--pluscharisma that just won't quit. Wheterh singing the plaintive "Why Can't This Be A Love Song," the steamy "Love Crazy" or the rock and funk driven, "More" Jenn brings color and emotion to every tune she touches. 8:00pm www.citycanyons.com
Alexi Booth - "You simply can't ignore the fact that Alexis has that certain something. Maybe it is her soulful voice--she's got a helluva set of pipes. Or it could be her well-crafted authentic sounding songs. Keep an eye on this one!"--Ear Candy Magazine
Classically trained from a young age on piano, trumpet, and French horn, Alexis Booth has spent years refining her voice as an instrument. She makes a commanding statement on her debut album, "begin", revealing a voice that resonates with power and soul and an eclectic stlye that spans the boundaries of pop, rock, and r&b. Recorded in a singer 8 hour recording session, this self-written, self-produced album is a throwback to live studio albums of old and bears semblance on many levels to a young Aretha Franklin or Bonnie Raitt. For music samples, visit Alexis online at www.alexisbooth.com 9:00pm
Emiko is rare breed of rock n'roll of the biggest kind--a sensitive, introspective songwriter, she breaks new ground as a female frontperson, who not only sings, but plays a lead instrument, takes her own solos, and is unafraid to say what people only dare to think. After rising to #1 on the Overplay UK Pop/Rock Charts and staying there for a record setting 17 weeks, Emiko was nominated for a 2004 Brit Award in the Unsigned Rock Category. Here in the US, she was voted Best New York City Rock Band of 2002-2003 by RadioCrystalBlue and nominated for the New Century Music Award, Best Female Rock Performer of 2002. Emiko is a three time veteran performer in the Songwriters Hall of Fame showcases and was featured on their "Best of the Songwriters Hall of Fame New Writers Showcase" Cd compilation (Volume 1) in April, 2003. MTV calls Emiko "Incredible live!!!" www.emikomusic.com 10:00pm

Moab Folk Music Festival Boasts Great Music, Scenic Surroundings and Family Fun; Event Set for Nov. 4-6, 2005
Plans for the 2005 edition of the Moab Folk Music Festival (www.MoabMusicFestival.com), in its third year, have been announced by the festival’s founder, Moab's Melissa Schmaedick. This year’s lineup includes some of the top folk musicians in the nation, performing at four Moab venues throughout the weekend of November 4th, 5th and 6th.
Moab, Utah (PRWEB) September 29, 2005 -- Plans for the 2005 edition of the Moab Folk Music Festival (www.MoabMusicFestival.com), in its third year, have been announced by the festival’s founder, Moab's Melissa Schmaedick. This year’s lineup includes some of the top folk musicians in the nation, performing at four Moab venues throughout the weekend of Nov. 4-6.
Among those appearing are Sloan Wainright (the sister of Loudon Wainright and aunt of Rufus and Martha); violinist Eileen Ivers, who has performed with the London Symphony Orchestra and dance troupe Riverdance; and Seattle's high-energy Laura Love. The weekend features individual performances by Jimmy LaFave, Eliza Gilkyson and Slaid Cleaves, as well as a group tribute to Woody Guthrie, "Ribbon of Highway, Endless Skyway," with Guthrie’s granddaughter Sarah Lee Guthrie and her husband Johnny Irion joining in, and many more.
Schmaedick says of the event, “This is our third year, and it will be our best yet. It’s a real honor to have so many top-notch performers here in Moab. Our team has had a great time assembling a music festival that can be enjoyed by people of all ages. We’re proud that we’ve created such a family-friendly — and environmentally sound — event.”
Schmaedick notes that the Folk Festival is alcohol-, drug- and pet-free, to ensure the enjoyment and safety of all audience members. In addition, to minimize the event’s impact on the environment, Synergy Company has donated wind-generated electricity to serve all power needs — and official festival T-shirts will be manufactured from 100% recycled cotton and other environmentally friendly products. She notes, “Moab offers a beautiful setting for our event, and these pro-environment values are in keeping with the local culture and the priorities of the people who live here. It’s exciting to have sponsors and vendors with such a deep desire to help us maintain this commitment to our surroundings.”
These natural and historic surroundings are part of the draw for the festival’s attendees. Performance stages are all within walking distance of each other, and close to shopping and dining in downtown Moab. In addition, concert goers can enjoy hiking, mountain biking and other outdoor activities in town, or at the nearby national parks. “This combination of great music and a fantastic natural setting provides visitors with endless activities for the entire weekend,” Schmaedick said.
