Blue Man Group
The Complex Review
Blue Man Group - Rock Music, Rocked Music
The Complex is Blue Man Group's incursion into the world of CD entertainment. It's performance art defined in Blue Man Group style, full of signature sounds, such as the Tube instruments and other unique 'found-musical' innovations all wrapped up by massive walls of percussion.
"Rock concert movement number one, the basic head-bob, rock concert movement number two, the one armed fist pump. In a moment it will be time to execute rock concert number three the up and down jumping motion here are your instructions, step one, bend your knees step and then jump into the air, step two let gravity bring you down and upon landing rock your head forward, step three, repeat. Ready go..." Time To Start [Blue Man Group - The Complex]

Blue Man Group: The Complex
The Complex adds to its already strong credibility with included collaborations from Dave Matthews, Dan the Automator [1] [2], Venus Hum, Rob Swift and Esthero. Make no mistake however, thrashing guitars and verse/chorus/bridge song structure place The Complex firmly into the Rock genre, shaken, not stirred, served with a Blue Man Group twist.
Fans of Blue Man Group live performances will instantly recognize and appreciate the immense wall of sound and driving, rhythmic inertia. The Complex is full of the intense energy and quirky textures that we've come to love, and expect from the "Men all Blue," Matt Goldman, Phil Stanton and Chris Wink. The Complex is choreographed in a manner that will leave you breathless. There is hardly a moment's rest, as listeners will find themselves performing all the standard rock movements as listed in 'Time to Start' and perhaps, inventing a few more.
Blue Man Group the Complex Review
The first track, 'Above,' begins serenely, evoking visions of sunlit meadows… that is until the pounding bass kicks in and sets the tone for the rest of the album. 'Time to Start' is the next and wastes no time in upping the intensity. "Rock concert movement number one: the basic head bob… ready? Go!" 'Sing Along' features a guest appearance by Dave Matthews, while Tracy Bonham lends her vocal skills to 'Up on the Roof,' as does Rob Swift on 'Shadows Pt. 2.'
Creatively, The Complex is all and more of what you would expect from the well-seasoned artistry of Blue Man Group. Still, even avid fans might be surprised by the depth and herein. Play it loud, and play it Blue! The Complex is an intense and addictive listen. Don't miss out on the experience. Now where's my blue paint? - reviewed by Jack "Papa" Baer 2003/04/24
