As you can see by the demo, there exists quite a bit of versatility regarding vertical-align and images. The working XHTML 2.0 working draft actually places images into the Text module and states that there, they should be treated as inline text. It only follows logic, that if treated as text, images can, to at least a certain degree, be styled as text. Now, obviously, this is an over-simplification, but still, it should cause you to look at inline images in a bit different light.
