Land O' Lakes Vacation Guide
Northwoods Adventure
Land O' Lakes Wisconsin is situated in the heart of the great northwoods. Surrounded by the Ottawa National Forest and the Sylvania Tract to the north, the Northern Highland State Forest to the west and the Nicolet National Forest to the south east, Land O' Lakes knows woods! And, just so you know, with hundreds of lakes and dozens of streams, Land O' Lakes knows water too. How else did you think we got the name?
Headwaters Country
Just east of Land O' Lakes is the famous Lac Vieux Desert, the headwaters of the Wisconsin River. While little more than a stream at its earliest beginnings, the Wisconsin River offers excellent canoeing for all. Several area outfitters offer guided trips ranging from a few hours to several days. The Wisconsin River runs 430 miles from its beginning at the south west shore of Lac Vieux Desert until it joins the mighty Mississippi River at Praire Du Chien in southwestern Wisconsin.
The Sylvania Tract & Ottawa National Forest
North of Land O' Lakes, the Ottawa National Forest If pristine wilderness adventure is your goal, the Sylvania Wilderness Tract of the Ottawa National Forest awaits.
The Sylvania Wilderness and Sylvania Recreation Area, is located near Watersmeet, Michigan and is part of the National Wilderness Preservation System. Combined with the adjacent Recreation Area, the 18,327 acre wilderness offers an outstanding experience for those who want to camp, fish, hike, canoe, ski or enjoy the solitude of a wilderness experience.
Few Wildernesses compare to Sylvania. Here you will find 34 named lakes - some with sandy beaches, others surrounded by record-size red and white pines. This large natural area with its old growth forest and pristine lakes provides habitat for a wide range of living things. While exploring Sylvania you might see threatened or endangered plants and animals - like rare orchids, bald eagles, loons and osprey.
