Chicago Cultural Group Bridges Cultures with Conference: AfriCaribe to Host Puerto Rican and Caribbean Folkloric Conference

AfriCaribe will host its second folklore conference in Chicago. This year's theme highlights the work being conducted between the Puerto Rican Bomba music and dance community and the Mexican and Colombian communities in Chicago. Invited guests from New York will also share their work in bridging the Puerto Rican and Dominican communities through music and dance.

CHICAGO (PRWEB) October 1, 2005 -- Expanding on-going efforts to create bridges between folkloric dance groups in Chicago, AfriCaribe announces its annual conference with the theme “Building Community/Bridging Communities.” The conference, October 21 – 22, 2005, will bring together cultural ambassadors from the New York and Chicago areas through a series of lectures, dance and drumming instruction and performance. The musical traditions of Colombia, Mexico, Puerto Rico and the Dominican Republic will be celebrated, studied and their respective African roots discussed. All conference events are open to the public. Visit www.africaribe.net for updated conference schedule, information, and registration.

AfriCaribe highlighted the work of Tierra Colombian Folkloric Dance Company earlier this year at its anniversary celebration. That unprecedented example of collaboration between two Chicago cultural groups brought to light the need for an arena where creative cooperation can thrive and be furthered. Tito Rodriguez reached out to the groups participating in this conference, basing the effort on the shared African influence on each group’s work, to bridge cultural gaps and build community ties between them.

About:
AfriCaribe is a non-profit organization dedicated to the preservation, research, promotion and development of the Puerto Rican and Caribbean cultures through music, dance, theatre and other artistic mediums.

AfriCaribe was created in 2000 by Evaristo “Tito” Rodriguez in an effort create an organization in Chicago that would have the unique intent of celebrating the African influence in Puerto Rico and other countries of the Caribbean. His vision came to fruition in the form of an umbrella organization that provides educational and cultural programming through four main programs. These are the academy through which professional dancers and musicians teach traditional drumming and dance of several Puerto Rican Bomba rhythms; the performance ensemble that prepares and presents various styles of folk music from Puerto Rico and the Caribbean through song, dance, drums and other percussive instruments; the production company which will be responsible for annual events including folklore conferences; and the education department that will provide workshops and lectures by members of the organization and other invited professionals.
