The Prophecy of Pru |
Careful, Careful. The meaning of the word prudence is cautious, and good sense. The new upcoming artist Pru, with her self-title debut album proves to be just that. She is sure of herself, planted in her ideals and morals, a little groggy in the morning (but aren’t we all?) and a student of strict anthropology and history studies. Not to be taken lightly, her poetry has been floating since that age of twelve. Her method of conversation is carried with grace, despite her lack of rest and other admirable traits soon follow. Her voice, soft and raspy, she says hello through her hotel room telephone. She’s in New York right now, and after a number of calls, cancellations, and re-scheduling for this interview between three representatives, it’s safe to say there’s no telling where she will be tomorrow. I ask her how she’s enjoying this fly- about life style and she replies, “Umm.., I guess it kinda just melts into life… You Know?…It’s pretty cool… I would like to spend a little bit more time in L.A. but ...you know.” |

Sleep deprived and still ticking she can’t really put a finger on any specific wake up time. “It varies, sometimes early, sometimes late. Pru recently finished up a pre-game show for the super bowl - an event that allowed her to experience Florida for the first time. It has become, next to L.A., one of her favorite places to visit as far as warm weather is concerned. She describes her style as simply “Soul Music.” “Very guitar oriented, p-funk, a little Chaka Khan. “[My Music] is a combination of different things, so there is really no way to say it’s this or the other.” She takes her well-rounded style as a factor of listening to all different types of music. She cares for worldly sounds and ethnic music. “A lot of Salsa, a lot of Indian and South African music, Arabian Music.” She really cares for Rachelle Ferrell, an outstanding Jazz vocalist who has broken nearly all limitations on the ability of the human voice. “She is definitely number one on my vocal list. She plays her voice and lyrics like an instrument.” Other artists include Sade, Gwen Stephani from No Doubt and Lauren Hill. Pru has been writing since 7, doing music, probably, since 12. Capital records picked her up through a demo. She was fortunate enough to have a good manager who knew what to do with it and landed her just where she needed to be. Although writing was her first love, and music had always “been on the scene.” It was never intended to be at this level. If it weren’t for the success, she would be studying anthropology and history now. No one, has ever gotten Pru star struck, although meeting Sade and Rachelle Farelle have been her high points. The song Aroma from her album was actually performed by Sade’s band and in gratitude Smooth Operator was revamped and added to the song list. Some of the producers were worried about Pru re-performing such a song. There were difficulties on the arrangement of the music, but in the end everything seemed to work out fine. And she looks forward to working with both Sade and Rachelle Farrelle in the future. No embarrassing moments, no silly anecdotes. She’s blunt with her goofs and it doesn’t really bother her. She says, “If I’m in public or on stage…..and I forget a line or forget something, I’m like…Um…if you all had the record, you would know it!” As of now, the video for the single “Candle” is in rotation on MTV, MTV2 and on BET. She found out about the execution of “The Box - (Music Television You Control)” in Chicago recently and shared in the disappointment. Although, the opportunity to call the box, never presented itself, she sympathized with local artists who are now unable to control the play and exposure of their newly released videos or song. “I think that’s really sad, because most of my favorite artists right now are underground, upcoming artists.” Zodiac Sign- Cancer. Favorite color - Blue. Movie? It’s in between Silence of the Lambs and Karma Sutra. Must have: Jewelry: right now, Pru is into stones. “Real, fake, colorful, healing. I’m into gold more now than silver….but it’ll change.” Her first love is her studies - Anthropology and History. She admits that the music aspect of her life has surpassed her expectations. “Music was something I did on the side.” And here it has nearly taken over her life. When I asked Pru if she thought the music business would spoil her ability to surround herself with quality people, she answered, “I think whatever type of energy or whatever of ora you have, that’s what you’re going to attract.” Pru has been lucky enough to still surround herself with good friends, despite the over abundance of “phonies, fans and “groupies” in the music industry. “Keep your old friends,” the ones who knew you when you weren’t on the cover of magazines or in music videos. “You have to be able to discern between spirits and know what’s coming true or what’s out for you. It depends on who you are as person and what you latch onto.” In the next couple of years, Pru hopes to still be writing good music, good songs. “I look forward to working with different artists…I come from a real underground type of environment. I want to bring that out in other artists.” If the opportunity to go into film presents itself, Pru definitely thinks she’ll want to, “Snatch that. I think when you’re in the position to present yourself before any type of entertainment field, I think you should snatch it all: acting, producing, writing, um…juggling.” We laugh and she can’t really think of any particular actor she’s interested in working with. Most likely because she’s found someone she’s comfortable with and is happily “involved”. “We’ve been friends for a long time.” Pru says. And the relationship seems to be blossoming. When asked about her CD, Pru feels that her new album is, “One of R&B’s best kept secrets. I think it’s something you’ve gotta have.” Her vocal ability cannot be doubted and the music production is great if you’re into deep soul, jazz and funk. Go for it if you like live instrumentations and guitar arrangements. She has based many songs on heart-felt poetry that she has written. She’s honest, true to herself (which is so important right now.) And I’m never one to let someone down on a request so, I’ll tell you this… “Your just not cool if you don’t have a Pru CD.
