Weezer is a band that has redefined simple pop melodies. The songs ARE simple, they ARE sweet, but there is an edge to the beat that dares you to just try and ignore them. Weezer has a pervasive quality that is relentless. The songs hit you head on. Try to turn aside and there they are again, only this time a little bit louder, a little bit closer. Definitely unforgettable.
The truth is it would be a shame to resist. This is the kind of music that makes you wish you were driving in a convertable, head nodding to the beats, smiling that big ole' smile that says Life is Good! I have no doubts that at some point we will hear samples of the Green Album as backdrops for those "hip commercials" that "cool media types" love to hurl at us. I may not remember their products... But I will never forget the beats.
The Green Album is Weezer's best yet. Ten songs that fit together flawlessly: a must own, must play release. Rivers Cuomo is at his best as a singer/songwriter, his English studies at Harvard have added to his quality. Clear, efficient, and very effective lyrics. Drummer Pat Wilson beats his kit with deceptive power, delivering the clean, driving beats that not only enhance the melodies but also set up the bounce. Mikey Welsh plays a very clean low end while Cuomo and Brian Bell hit just the right amount of guitar distortion. The result is pure Weezer. No one does simple pop better. Not even close.
The video link for Island in the Sun is the Spike Jonze version. It fits perfectly. The Buddy Holly video is included here just because I like it. Good enough reason for me. It is also another Spike Jonze production. Spike Jonze recently won "Best Director" [MTV Music Video Awards 2001] for his Fatboy Slim/Christopher Walken video Weapon of Choice.
